Resilience of Critical Infrastructure (CI) to Extreme Weather Events (EWE), such as heavy rainfall, drought or icing, is one of the most demanding challenges for both government and society. Extreme Weather (EW) is a phenomenon that causes severe threats to the well-functioning of CI. Robust and Resilient Critical infrastructure can be an effective component for Disaster risk reduction. The EU-INTACT-project has been dealing with CI-vulnerability and risk management under extreme weather events.

INTACT is an EU funded project which aims to offer Decision Support to CI operators and policy makers regarding Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) against changing Extreme Weather Event (EWE) risks caused by climate change. Guidance and learning information is available on the INTACT-Wiki based on a Europe wide basis (5 case studies) aassessing the resilience of such CI for regionally differentiated risk associated with extreme weather. http://intact-wiki.eu

It brings together innovative and cutting edge knowledge and experience in Europe in order to develop and demonstrate best practices in engineering, materials, construction, planning and designing risk mitigating measures as well as for effectively preparing, crisis response and recovery capabilities.

Our group co-leads the WP2 and contributes to WP4, WP5, WP7 and WP8.

Our main commitments within these WPs are to define appropriate Extreme Weather indicators (EWI's), characterizing the relevant climate critical factors for the infrastructures, to analyse their historical trends and the effect of the climate change in their frequency. These EWI's will be used in the case studies within the WP5.

  • D2.2 (WP2): Analysis of Historical Trends and Assessment of RCM Performance (M16, August 2015).
  • D2.3 (WP2): Production Future Scenarios for EWIs, considering ENSEMBLES data (M18, October 2015).
  • D2.4 (WP2): Production Future Scenarios for EWIs, considering CORDEX data at a 10km resolution and calibrated scenarios at a local scale, where possible (M30, October 2016).


  • MS2 (WP2): EW and CI vulnerability indicators are identified and available to the consortium (M6, October 2014).
  • MS11 (WP2): EW scenarios defined and reported (M30, October 2016).
