Extreme precipitation events over the Iberian Atlantic Margin: The role of atmospheric rivers

Atmospheric Rivers (ARs) are narrow and elongated structures of strong horizontal atmospheric moisture transport. On average, ARs account for approximately 90% of the poleward precipitable water transport concentrated within only 10% of the zonal circumference. Typically, 4-5 ARs can be found in each hemisphere at any time. The link between ARs and extreme precipitation events (EPE) has been analyzed for several places. The present study provides a high resolution analysis of the relationship between ARs and EPE throughout
the Iberian Atlantic Margin (IAM).
